Nothing more beautiful than a set of curls. We love them, we embrace, but they have a mindset of their own, which can get a little bit out of control. And as men, we want a tamed strokable beard, even if it’s curly, but definitely not frayed and fuzzy. It goes without saying that curly beards are genetic, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t manage just fine if you follow our tips on how to handle a curly beard.
The Tools
To untangle the mess, use a wooden comb that has a wider tooth. It’s a great way to get those curls to straighten out. If you have some time to spare, use a bristle brush to help you get all your hairs in line, grouped together, and all going the same way. To wash, use our beard shampoo that is soft enough for your skin but also conditions stubborn facial hairs and prevent excessive hair loss. Use the moisturising oil after you shower when your pores are open, and follow up with a beard balm to assist the styling phase.
The Routine
So you made sure you got the right products, but it goes beyond the tools. It’s more about the techniques you use if you want to style your beard curly, or opt for a hair dryer to straighten it.
You have two options:
If you want to keep it wavy with curls:
- Soften your beard hair: start with your beard shampoo, and follow it up with your oil. Wash twice a week is perfect because you don’t want to risk drying your beard and apply your beard oil twice daily.
- Comb your beard when it’s wet: it helps straighten it over time if this is what you’re looking for, or simply train and define its waves if you’re looking to keep its natural style. A small tip: apply some beard oil in your hair before combing for the full effect.
- Train your beard hair to grow in the same direction: when used daily, a boar bristle brush loosens beard curls and untangles knots for a smooth appearance. It also distributes your skin’s natural oils evenly throughout your beard, sealing split ends and taming stray hairs.
If you want to straighten it:
- Mix beard oil and moustache wax together to form a light hold paste.
- Attach a diffuser to your blow dryer for even drying.
- Set the speed on low heat
- Dry your hair by placing the blow dryer under your beard, then pointing it upward. Comb through and blow dry up and out. This untangles knots while boosting volume. Turn up the heat for extra straightening.
- Now point your diffuser downwards while brushing downwards with your fingers.
- Apply the balm
