A beard brush vs. comb: which is better for you?

Posted by

As men, we will never ever differentiate between dim grey and midnight blue, it’s just black, and that’s completely fine. But it’s definitely not acceptable to think that a comb and a brush are the same thing. No no. Last time we spoke, we talked about beard combing, and we think it’s only fair to explore beard brushing, its importance, and the difference between brush and comb. Let’s roll beasts!

You need to brush

Just like any beard tool, a boar bristle brush is necessary for your kit. A brush has countless benefits other than styling your beard.  Throughout the day, your beard goes through many polluting elements, which is why the brush leaves it clean, and especially soft and straight if you make it a habit

Throughout the day, your beard goes through many polluting elements. The brush leaves it clean, It clears any food residues and dandruff, and prevents hair breakage and frizz.  The brush will also soften and straighten the hair, distribute the beard oil you apply equally on the beard,  and will train hair to grow in the right direction. So make a habit to brush your beard on a daily basis.

The fact that the boar bristle beard brush removes the dirt off of your beard could also mean less washing, especially if you’re concerned about how many times you wash it. How to do it exactly? Simply brush from the top down; since you’re removing any extra dirt off your beard, you don’t want them back in.

How to clean the brush?

The first step is to grab a cotton-tipped swab and run it through the fibers of the brush to loosen any trapped hairs and dead skin. You might notice that little fibers become loose and fall as you pull, but that’s perfectly normal as they thin out with time. Once in a while, you can rinse it off with warm water and beard shampoo or soap, and shake it off. Remember that a quality brush will absorb the oil you use, and this is a good thing, so it is recommended to minimize how many times you clean it with water and soap. Twice a month is a good average.

What’s the difference between the comb and brush?

Combs untangle your hair, hence the spacing between the teeth. brushes, on the other hand, are mainly used to help your skin and hairs release its natural oils and massage the follicles. So the best time to use a comb is shortly after showering or washing your face to help smoothen the combing process. And when it comes to brushing, we recommend it after combing to help get the blood flow for a much better looking and healthier beard.

When you buy a brush you have to consider the length of your beard. The Bou Shanab round boar bristle brush is comfortable to use and firm which allows it to smooth out tangles even if you have a long beard. As for our oval boar bristle brush, it is soft and works well with diverse beard styles, especially if your beard is not that long yet or if you like to keep a short beard.
