5 beard types and how you should maintain them

Posted by

There’s a world of beards waiting for you. Different styles work for different face shapes and lifestyles so the options are countless. And we’re helping you find the style that best fits the one you’re looking for. Don’t be afraid to try new things, especially when it comes to your facial hair. So here’s a quick overview on 5 of the most popular beard types and how to maintain them.

The Full Beard

An all-time classic of course. Great for a casual look if you’re in the classroom, hitting the gym, or going out with friends or a date. Flexible to fit any setting,  many of us have worn the full beard, and managed with time to make it convenient for any profession or lifestyle as long as it stays well-groomed.

How to maintain:

Just let it grow while cleaning your neckline. Anything below its neck shape needs to be shaved off, particularly to the corner of your neck and head. Use tweezers or scissors to pluck or cut unruly cheek hairs. And since you will be dealing with a lot of hair, better keep it healthy and moisturized at all times.

The Hollywoodian

A more formal beard, well-trimmed, aand appropriate for more formal situations. It consists of a moustache connected to a goatee that extends up the jawline and disconnects from the sideburn. If you work in an office setting or used to attending social events then it’s a perfect beard style to consider.

How to maintain:

Shaving each sideburn from the ear to the jawline. Use a razor to clean up any outward-facing neck hair. With a beard trimmer, carefully cut stray hairs on the upper cheekbone to create a clean, lined-up look. For a killer mustache, train it from the start using premium mustache wax.

The Short Boxed

The Short Boxed beard runs down the sideburns and chin, connecting with the mustache on the sides. Shave a clear box out of your cheeks, leaving a margin between a centimetre and an inch in length. The neckline should leave about an inch of hair under your chin and jawline. Great style for formal parties and traveling commitments.

How to maintain:

Always use pair of scissors to trim and then shape your box and neckline with a razor.

The Balbo

Also known as The Iron Man beard. If your face comes with a narrow chin then you picked the right style. Achieved by growing a full beard first, it also comes with growing a mustache without connecting them together.

How to maintain:

It requires careful sculpting so you need good razors to achieve the look. You can use a disposable or an electric razor to take off the hair on the sides, and a straight razor to shape the Balbo beard style appropriately.

The Circle Beard

Best for an oval and round face shapes. Also known as the “standard” beard, the circle beard is a combination of mustache and rounded goatee beard styles. Wash it regularly with quality face soap to reduce the amount of dead skin.

How to Achieve:

Make sure that you have grown a reasonable amount of hair to avoid over trimming or shaving. Since it’s such a delicate style, we would advise that you go to your barber for more detailed results.
